The idea of combining heat exposure with mental support is based on fascinating data, notably a 2016 randomized clinical trial (RCT) by Janssen and his team, showing that a controlled rise in body temperature improves mood in a lasting way. To test the synergy of heat with emotion management, Dr. Ashley Mason’s team published a randomized pilot trial (RCT) in October 2025 combining mental support through dialogue with infrared sauna sessions. This trial of 30 participants revealed very positive feedback, as 80% to 92% of individuals observed a dramatic boost in their psychological well-being at the end of the protocol. Nevertheless, stating that the sauna “optimizes” this approach proves to be an exaggeration in light of the results of this same trial. Indeed, the group that underwent sham sauna sessions (without an actual temperature increase) showed emotional benefits just as significant, if not slightly superior, to the group exposed to actual heat. Thus, larger studies must still demonstrate that thermal activation provides a measurable additional benefit compared to the simple deep relaxation of a wellness break or a positive expectancy effect.
