This advice is supported by robust, recent scientific data. A 2024 meta-analysis led by sports science researcher Brad Schoenfeld confirms that cold water immersion immediately after exercise hinders muscle development and strength gains. Indeed, randomized controlled trials, such as the landmark study by Roberts et al. (2015), show that cold exposure reduces natural inflammation and the delivery of nutrients required for fiber reconstruction. Furthermore, new muscle protein synthesis is slowed for nearly 5 hours following cold exposure. The recommended 4-hour delay is therefore a logical extrapolation of these physiological data to allow time for the growth signal to activate. Although cold remains useful for mitigating short-term muscle soreness, avoiding it after an hypertrophy session is a well-founded recovery strategy.
