Exercise science largely supports the idea that combining strength training and endurance, known as concurrent training, is not only possible but beneficial for overall health and performance. Meta-analyses (e.g., Wilson et al., Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research) indicate that while potential interference may exist at extreme volumes, it is negligible for the majority of practitioners and can even improve work capacity. Muscle strengthening helps runners stabilize their joints and prevent injuries, a consistent observation in studies on running injury prevention. Conversely, cardio improves aerobic capacity, which allows for better recovery between sets of intense strength training. The assertion that these are complementary rather than opposing activities is therefore firmly grounded in exercise physiology. There is no evidence that these practices cancel each other out, provided that overall recovery is managed intelligently.

What the graded evidence says

Evidence
B

Linked to, not proven to cause.

Effect
all-cause mortality by combination of aerobic + muscle-strengthening activity — 1 h/week aerobic HR 0.85 and levelling to ~0.73 at 3 h/week; adding muscle-strengthening 1-2x/week conferred further risk reduction; lowest mortality in those meeting both guidelines
Measured on
US adults (416,420 and 500,705 in two national cohorts)

What’s uncertain

These are associations from observational cohorts, not proof of cause; healthier or more motivated people may do more of both. The specific percentages sometimes quoted for one activity vs another come from particular studies and shouldn't be treated as fixed.
