Science does indeed support that intense cold exposure triggers a significant release of catecholamines, notably norepinephrine and adrenaline, as demonstrated in a pivotal study published in the European Journal of Applied Physiology. A famous study (Søberg et al., 2022) also observed a sustained increase in dopamine (up to 250%) following cold water immersion. However, it is important to note that these spikes are physiological and transient; the idea of a 'durable' long-term increase for mood regulation purposes relies more on stress adaptation mechanisms (hormesis) than on a constant elevation of neurotransmitters. While the stimulating effect is well-documented, clinical evidence regarding the direct long-term impact on overall mental health remains limited by sample sizes. The advice is therefore founded on real biological mechanisms, although the interpretation concerning dopamine is sometimes presented in a very optimistic manner.

What the graded evidence says

Effect
CV events, high-risk patients on high-dose EPA (REDUCE-IT) — -25% relative (high-risk only)
Measured on
REDUCE-IT: 8,179 statin-treated high-risk patients

What’s uncertain

Strong for a specific medical use; modest for everyday wellness.
