The underlying physiology is real — sleep cycles run about 90 minutes (with genuine individual variability of 60 to 110 minutes), and waking at the end of a REM cycle is linked to an easier wake-up. But the leap to a "sleep less" hack is explicitly debunked by reference bodies: the Sleep Health Foundation calls the "sleep calculator" concept "unscientific hype," because you can't reliably predict when someone falls asleep or the exact length of a given cycle, which makes counting backward from a wake time largely illusory in practice. The headline promises a shortcut that outruns what cycle mechanics can actually guarantee: cutting sleep hours still carries the well-documented downsides of sleep deprivation, regardless of wake-up timing.
