The French NutriNet-Santé cohort (BMJ 2018, about 105,000 participants) links a 10-point rise in the UPF share of the diet to roughly +12% overall cancer risk and +11% breast cancer risk. UK Biobank (2023, about 197,000 participants) finds a more modest association for overall cancer (+2% per 10 points) but a stronger one for ovarian cancer (+19%). A study across three US cohorts finds a 29% higher colorectal-cancer risk in men in the highest UPF-consumption quintile, with no significant association in women. These are observational data — impossible to replace with controlled trials over a decades-long follow-up — so they show a reproduced association across different populations, not strict proof of causation or a single identified mechanism.
