noli's read

The transverse abdominis is the deep muscle that acts like a natural corset, and strengthening it effectively helps to better support the viscera, which can provide a flatter appearance to the abdominal wall (studies in biomechanics and physiology). However, reducing the appearance of the stomach to this muscle alone is an oversimplification. Subcutaneous fat (adipose tissue) covers the muscle: no contraction, however intense, can eliminate this layer without an appropriate energy deficit (observations in nutrition). Furthermore, factors such as digestion, bloating, or overall posture play a major role in immediate abdominal volume. While strengthening the transverse is an excellent pillar for core stability and posture, it does not constitute an isolated miracle solution for one's figure. Science considers body composition a multifactorial result including nutrition, overall physical activity, and genetics.

What the graded evidence says

Evidence
B
Effect
core/transversus training effect on trunk function and pain; abdominal exercise effect on abdominal fat/waist — core stability work slightly better than general exercise for short-term back pain and function (modest); abdominal exercise produces no reduction in abdominal fat or waist (spot reduction not supported)
Measured on
healthy adults; adults with non-specific low back pain

What’s uncertain

Deep-core activation is real and posture/stability gains are modest. The claim that vacuums 'slim the waist' or reduce abdominal fat is not supported, fat loss is systemic and skeletal waist width doesn't change with training.
